I must confess it is the upsurge of these spurious clans that
has given impetus to my own pretensions of late.
It seems to me there must be a shilling or two in this for somebody.

"The Chief without a Clan"
Glenallan - It is exceedingly important to the Americans who only know
the hype first promulgated, really promulgated slightly post WWII in
America how wonderful it is that All Scots, no matter where they may
live in Scotland belong to a clan, who has a chief and an ancestral
home. The chief of course wears a kilt which is pecular to his clan
only. He has a coat of arms and has a badge, and all the rest of it.
If you don't think so, look at the awful painting of BPC. If you
don't use that painting, try the Raeburn painting of Sir. John
Sinclair and one or two others who figured prominently in the American
Revolution. Also, all of Scotland is in "The Highlands" - America and
Canada have wide plains with no trees and no broken terrain to break
the skyline, only flat land! So since Scotland does, it must be
"highlands". There are innumerable books covering just that subject,
clan, chief, tartan and paraphernalia and the land the clan controls.
It has been only in the last part of the 20th century there is an
attempt to print something else! Every year the clothing industry in
America make children's clothing using something like Royal Stewart,
Black Watch and Gordon plaids. So you true Scotsmen/women need to
teach the benighted Americans what is the truth about your country. No
Claymore or basket hilted sword, no Bonnet or Glengary and certainly
no kilt for daily wear! And anything else you can think of that is
true about Scotland! Reminds me last summer of the American,
obviously American in full highland regalia on Princes Street. Sal
