I believe that a Scottish group is not complete without music and it
has been a while since we had any here because of the Canadian
restrictions on posting music. However, YouTube has solved that
problem for us by allowing artists to post their music, and so here is
a beautiful song from Runrig's 30th anniversary, Faileas Air An
Airigh - in English, Shadow on the Shieling.

A shieling is a roughly built stone hut commonly found high in the
mountains, where in summer the young people of a clachan (hamlet)
would drive their cattle to take advantage of the new grass in Spring.
The word "clachan" itself means "stones" as stone was pretty much the
only material available in the old days to build homes and shelters.
I should add that I didn't much care for the English translation, so I
have replaced some parts with words that I felt reflected the Gaelic
more accurately.

Faileas Air An Airigh - Shadow On The Sheiling

Tha faileas air an airigh
Faileas air an airigh
Tha 'n long a-muigh 'ceann a bhaigh
Air madainn cheitean trath

There's a shadow on the sheiling
A shadow on the sheiling
The ship is outside
At the head of the bay
Early on a May morning

Tha grian ar cuimhne ag eiridh
Grian ar cuimhne ag eiridh
A' siubhal sraidean duthaich ghalld'
Tro bhailtean saoghal chein

The sun of our memory is rising
The sun of our memory is rising
Walking the streets of foreign countries
And the cities of a far off time.

Tha'm feasgar cuin 's na siantan blath
Tha grian 's an iar mar mheall de'n or
An cuan mar sgathan gorm gun sgleo
Is bu mhor mo mhian bhi 'n Uibhist leat

The evening is calm and the skies are warm
The sun is in the west, a great ball of gold
The ocean is like a mirror, blue without blemish
And great is my desire to be in Uist with you

Togaidh sinn ar fonn an ard
Togaidh sinn ar fonn an ard
`s ged' tha mi fada bhuat
Cha dhealaich sinn a' chaoidh

We will lift up our tune on high
We will lift up our tune on high
Although I am far from you
We will never sever.

Hey, that's big-hearted of you, Plastic Dick. I think Runrig do well
without YOUR help. You should be sticking to your Gay haunts.....now
you have emerged from the old closet. (Translate THAT into Gaelic, old
fruit) Pun intended. Do you deny this alias, shithead?
Astronomer Royal. Your e-mail address etc? What story have you to
offer in denial this time? Forgery? It has been known for a skellem
like your wee bent self to play the double-shuffle too. "mìcheil" also
a forgery? "Michilín" you were caught out with that one a' la Suzie
Flame. You are to fuckin' old & stupid PC-wise as well as just plain
fucking daft to play these wee games, Plastic Wanker. Get a life &
take up knitting. It's safer for the likes of you with shit-for-
brains, twat. hahahahahaha You keep falling down that big black hole,
Plastique. Even yer bumboy, Arsehole First White Settler Anywhere
(legal in Kiwiland since 2004) can't pull you out of the brown stuff
any more. Neither does he want to, by the looks of things. He's got a
new fella, bets on it? hahahahah You got the Big E, shirt-lifter. You
still greetin, twat?
